It's the early 1970s and the local anchorman is not only a source of news but a revered local hero. In San Diego, Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell), a mustachioed bachelor with a taste for scotch, unparalleled passion for the jazz flute, and a near-telepathic connection with his spirited mutt, Baxter, is that man. Rounding out Ron's testosterone-heavy news team are his close friends--cologne-obsessed man-on-the-street Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), sports reporter Champ Kind (Dave Koechner), and mentally challenged weatherman Brick Tamland (Steve Carrell). Their male camaraderie is challenged, though, when producer Ed Harken (Fred Willard), pressured by changing times, brings the first female reporter, ambitious Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate), to the team. Ron finds his chauvinistic ideals compromised further when he starts falling in love with her.
Fueled by Ferrell's singularly loopy persona, ANCHORMAN joins the long list of comedies which have successfully poked fun at the styles and mores of the '70s. Here, with Ferrell's script and Adam McKay's direction, the character of Ron Burgundy becomes a full-bodied comic creation whose possibilities for laughs aren't nearly exhausted by the end credits. The result is an often hilarious celebration of moustaches, wide neckties, alcohol abuse, and good, old-fashioned sexism.

Matt Damon returns as amnesiac assassin Jason Bourne in this fast-paced follow-up
to 2002's THE BOURNE IDENTITY. Forced out of hiding as the result of an attempt
on his life, Bourne fulfills his earlier promise to wreak vengeance on his former
CIA employers, some of whom may be in league with murderous Russians. Brian
Cox and Joan Allen are both great as warring agency chiefs convinced Bourne
orchestrated the murder of two of their own in a deal gone bad. Thanks to tense,
gritty direction by Paul Greengrass (BLOODY SUNDAY), the plot stays tight, the
characters believable, and suspense and thrills flow steady. Moody photography
enhances the urban European locations, which--combined with handheld camerawork
and fast editing--keeps the action realistic and CGI-free. Vividly capturing
the fatalist flavor of Robert Ludlum's original novel, this is "globalism
noir" at its finest. Franka Potente and Julia Stiles are back from the
original, and the always dependable Marton Csokas shows up as one of Bourne's
deadly fellow operatives. A rousing car chase through Moscow may outdo the ones
in RONIN and THE FRENCH CONNECTION for visceral speed and length. As the icing
on the cake, John Powell provides a menacing, ambient percussive score.

Elsewhere, tornadoes and hail menace the globe, leading to international disasters on an extraordinary level.
Emmerich, who has proven to be a master of big-budget cinematic destruction on numerous occasions, aims to outdo himself with THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW. Here entire cities are ripped apart, flooded, and/or frozen, adding up to one of the biggest disaster movies ever filmed. Although astonishingly rendered special effects rule the movie, adept actors such as Quaid and Gyllenhaal (along with Sela Ward, Ian Holm, Emmy Rossum, and others) turn in solid performances that help to balance out the meteorological mayhem. Surprisingly, Emmerich also uses the film as a vehicle for clever moments of social and political commentary, making THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW admirably smarter and considerably more entertaining than typical Hollywood blockbusters.

In DODGEBALL: A TRUE UNDERDOG STORY, Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn team up once again (following STARSKY & HUTCH) for another comic romp. While hilariously satirizing modern-day gym culture, the film also celebrates a sport that has previously been relegated to the elementary school playground. Peter La Fleur (Vaughn) owns the decrepit Average Joe's gym, which has been losing its clients ever since the glitzy Globo Gym opened up across the street. White Goodman (Stiller), Globo Gym's main spokesman, is a preposterously vain egomaniac on the cusp of taking over La Fleur's failing business. La Fleur learns from a beautiful attorney (Christine Taylor) that if he doesn't come up with $50,000 in 30 days, his career running a gym will be over. Potential salvation arrives in the form of a Las Vegas dodgeball tournament, but conquering a sport one hasn't played in several decades isn't such an easy feat. Fortunately for Peter, he finds a coach for his team: the hardheaded, ex-superstar Patches O'Houlihan (Rip Torn). As Peter and his ragtag team make their way to the championship in Las Vegas, they must contend with White, who has assembled a team of his very own. Rawson Marshall Thurber's debut feature is a highly assured work, which features hilarious cameos from Chuck Norris, Lance Armstrong, David Hasselhoff, and William Shatner.

Writer, director, and star Zach Braff makes his debut feature with this off-kilter, unusually smart, self-assured coming-of-age film. GARDEN STATE has a knack for sharp-edged humor, character quirks, and finding lovely imagery within the mundanity of the suburbs. These things combined are abundant evidence to indicate that Braff's filmmaking future is filled with limitless promise.

Loosely based on the novel from Isaac Asimov, I, ROBOT is an action-packed, CGI-laden thrill ride from director Alex Proyas (THE CROW). Set in 2035, Will Smith stars as Chicago law enforcer Detective Del Spooner. Called upon to investigate the mysterious suicide of scientist Dr. Alfred Lanning (James Cromwell), Spooner deduces that Lanning didn't kill himself but was, in fact, murdered. Lanning worked for the US Robotics headquarters, where he constructed friendly robots designed to help humans with mundane tasks. Lanning's creations are prevalent all over the city, and have been fully integrated into the culture. They are allegedly programmed not to harm humans, but as Spooner digs deeper, his investigations lead him to a new type of robot that Lanning was working on before his death, and one of these models--the highly charismatic Sonny--becomes the prime suspect in the case. Spooner bears a grudge against robots due to an unfortunate incident, so his case against Sonny is met with shrugs of indifference from colleagues who know his prejudices all too well. Fortunately he meets an ally, and a romantic interest, in Dr. Susan Calvin (Bridget Moynahan), who agrees to help him. As Sonny is cured of his violent tendencies, the other robots amass across the city, working on the assumption that they need to control humanity in order to safeguard its future.
Director Proyas unleashes a fearsome arsenal of special effects, while Spooner and Calvin chase the errant robots all over the city. Sonny's facial features and voice are digitally manipulated from the actor Alan Tudyk, lending an unnerving element of humanity to the character. Smith and Moynahan give convincing performances throughout, and as the action races towards a nail-biting conclusion, the message of the movie suggests that technologies built to help mankind could also provide its downfall.

John Creasy (Denzel Washington) is a lost soul. A former government operative, he has become an alcoholic nomad, searching for inspiration and redemption. An old friend (Christopher Walken) who lives in Mexico gets Creasy a job as a bodyguard for nine-year-old Lupita "Pita" Ramos (Dakota Fanning), the daughter of Mexican Samuel (Marc Anthony) and his American wife Lisa (Radha Mitchell). Creasy's primary job is to protect Pita from the kidnapping attempts that are an increasing menace to the children of Mexico City's wealthy. A man of few words and many secrets, Creasy initially balks at Pita's attempts to befriend him, but soon a bond grows between the precocious child and this lonely man who is tormented by his past. When Pita is kidnapped despite Creasy's valiant attempts to save her, he will do anything to bring all of those involved to justice. His fury unravels a net of almost unimaginable corruption and greed in the process. Director Tony Scott (TOP GUN, CRIMSON TIDE) builds the relationship between Creasy and Pita in the first half of the film in order to justify Creasy's violent actions in the latter half, and in the process he does a fine job of keeping the film's tension consistently high.

Cole Hauser stars in this riveting revenge thriller as Bo, a decent Montana family man who makes it big as the star of an action-movie franchise. Unfortunately his naivete to the Los Angeles scene makes him an easy target for a cadre of scuzzy tabloid photographers headed by Rex Harper (Tom Sizemore). They ensnare, exploit, entrap, sue, and harass him, attack his car with flashbulbs, and put his little boy into a coma. A Malibu detective (Dennis Farina) shrugs his shoulders at the ineffectuality of the law, leading Bo to take revenge into his own hands.
Anger-management candidate Mel Gibson produced and appears in a blink-or-you'll-miss-it cameo, as do Matthew McConaughey and Chris Rock. Daniel Baldwin is one of the photographers, and he and Sizemore really crank the reprehensible-creep level to a good, old-fashioned high. In the best tradition of violent revengers, the moral compass starts spinning out of control by the end, and you can feel the fury of all the stars involved who have to live life to the constant accompaniment of tabloid lies and flashing cameras. PAPARAZZI is effective, it's fast, and it has a good moody score by Brian Tyler.

Helen Harris (Kate Hudson) is a rising star in the New York City fashion world, just on the brink of being promoted to agent at a premiere modeling agency. The sudden death of her older sister (Felicity Huffman) and her brother-in-law shocks Helen from her exciting life of photo shoots, nightclubs, and hot dates. The lovely Milla Jovovitch is back with a vengeance as amnesiac, genetically-altered zombie ass-kicker, Alice, in this sequel to the 2002 hit film, which is based on the video game. This time around the sinister Umbrella Corporation sends a team of investigators into their destroyed underground lab (the ground-zero of carnage in the previous film) and unwittingly unleash the still-staggering zombies and monsters out into the population of Raccoon City. Soon Umbrella has evacuated all of their own key employees and has shut everyone else inside to be devoured. A mastermind chemist's daughter gets left behind in the confusion, and she is the one ticket out for Alice and a handful of dwindling survivors, including the equally hot, skimpily dressed, and almost-as-tough lady cop, Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory). There's some nifty motorcycle riding, plenty of bullets and splattering blood, and even a new monster--the hulking, heavily-armored, seriously ugly Nemesis. Comic actor Mike Epps is great as a pimped-out hustler who handles the whole dead-coming-back-to-life thing with cool nonchalance. In some ways, this nonstop creep show is even an improvement over the original, with a pervasive mood of nihilistic corporate dehumanization adding extra concern about the future of civilization to the mix of shooting, dying, punching, and munching.

In this meet-the-parents sequel to the romantic fairy tale in which two ogres
fall in love, SHREK 2 brings the loveable green menace (voiced by Mike Meyers)
back to the big screen for a second round of mischief. This time around, in
addition to the voices of Cameron Diaz (as Shrek's sweetheart Fiona) and Eddie
Murphy (as their companion Donkey), Julie Andrews and John Cleese chime in as
Fiona's parents, Queen Lillian and King Harold. Surprising newcomer Puss in
Boots (Antonio Banderas)--a slyly funny tabby honed for swashbuckling adventure--joins
the crew. Last but certainly not least, the conniving duo of vain Prince Charming
(Rupert Everett) and his power-hungry mom, the Fairy Godmother (Jennifer Saunders),
spice up the action.
When Fiona insists that her new husband Shrek visit her parents, they travel to Far Far Away (a Disneyfied medieval version of Hollywood) where everything goes wrong. The King and Queen are outraged to see their daughter married to an ogre, and while Fiona tries to calm them, Shrek sets out to find a solution. He finds it, in the form of a Happily Ever After potion, which only complicates matters, drawing all parties into a confused exchange of magic and spells, all for the sake of true love. With shimmering animation giving SHREK 2 near-3-D visuals, the witty scripting and eclectic pop music soundtrack keep the film hopping along with an upbeat pace. "Holding Out for a Hero" by Frou Frou, and "Livin' la Vida Loca" by Eddie Murphy are the most raucous of the film's many great songs, though more subtle numbers such as "Accidentally in Love" by Counting Crows, and "Little Drop of Poison" by Tom Waits certainly enrich some key scenes of this enjoyable family film.

Jonah Jameson) are all pitch-perfect in their roles, and, as the once-noble Octavius, Molina is remarkable, relishing his villainous lines, while giving the character a surprisingly vulnerable side. Throughout the movie, Raimi expertly balances drama and humor with dynamic action sequences, making SPIDER-MAN 2 feel more like a continuation of the original tale rather than an obligatory sequel. For a Hollywood movie, that's a real feat.

Based on a book by Ira Levin which satirizes the roles of 1950s housewives, this is a remake of the 1975 film adaptation. Director Frank Oz presents a dramatic reworking of the horror classic, putting a totally over-the-top slant on the story that gives it true comedic value. In the early 21st century, a fast-paced Manhattan couple, Joanna (Nicole Kidman) and Walter (Matthew Broderick), both work for a major television network. While she is a leader and breadwinner in producing reality shows, he is a mere middle-management type. So when Joanna has a nervous breakdown, and Walter takes command, he's happy to find that for once in his life she's not stealing his fire. This sentiment is only asserted by the boys club that welcomes him when they move to the "perfect" town of Stepford, Connecticut. There, the women have been transformed by their husbands into a totally submissive, near-robotic state in which they are blissfully happy doing housework and looking pretty, and are totally compliant to their men. With Claire (Glenn Close) and Mike (Christopher Walken) leading this web of weirdness, Joanna and her only normal friend, Bobbie (Bette Midler), race to solve the mystery before they too become Stepford Wives.

With soaring photography that circles from above then swoops in for the action,
TROY is Wolfgang Petersen's majestic presentation of the classic Greek legend.
It tells the story of an epic battle over Helen (Diane Kruger), the queen of
Sparta, who is kidnapped by her lover Paris (Orlando Bloom), the prince of Troy.
This infuriates Helen's husband Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson), whose brother Agamemnon
(Brian Cox) convinces him to invade Troy and kill Helen. They recruit Achilles
(Brad Pitt), the best warrior in Greece, whose bravery, quick feet, and remarkable
swordsmanship (not to mention tan biceps, short kilts, and blond locks) have
earned him a reputation that is almost as impressive as his ego. Achilles agrees
to fight for Sparta, if only for the fame it will bring him. Even Achilles'
mother, in a touching scene, advises him to forget mortal achievements and become
a hero who will be remembered throughout history. Along with the invasion of
Troy, a series of duals must also be fought: Paris, who is heartbreaking in
his lovestruck naivety, must go up against the enraged Menelaus; and Achilles
must settle a score with Hector (Eric Bana), who is fiercely dedicated to protecting
his brother Paris and their father, the frail king Priam (Peter O'Toole). When
the war finally ignites in its massive proportions, the action is awesome. And
as the increasingly dramatic events play out, TROY earns its own timeless reputation
among other action-adventure epics such as GLADIATOR and SPARTACUS.

A meticulous filmmaker, Shyamalan displays his penchant for setting up a fascinating atmosphere in every aspect of the movie, from its distinctive color scheme to its intentionally genteel dialogue to its outstanding cinematography, courtesy of Roger Deakins. Renowned cast members Phoenix, William Hurt, Sigourney Weaver, and Adrien Brody are excellent, but the true standout is Bryce Dallas Howard (daughter of director Ron Howard), who embodies the heart of the film with her vulnerable but fiercely vital performance. Like Shyamalan's other movies, THE VILLAGE has a distinct twist that offers shocking revelations, but this film's overwhelming sense of menace is what is sure to resonate with viewers long after it's over.
